In Trauma Sensitive Yoga I blend practices of Yoga, Somatics & Mindfulness,

to support you in your unique and personal journey of:

  • navigating safer connection with your own body and the world around you

  • cultivating the ability to remain present, the capacity to notice and tolerate inner experiences (creating capacity)

  • developing a connection to your internal experience and felt sense

  • fostering a sense of personal agency and a capacity for choice-making & self-regulation

4 Key Principles of TSY

Experiencing the PRESENT MOMENT

Making CHOICES

Taking Effective ACTION

Creating RHYTHMS

  1. Experiencing the Present Moment

Somatic awareness is a pathway to experience the physical sensations of the body right here & now and serves as a coping tool to manage disassociation. The body might not feel like a safe space to inhabit after trauma, creating a tendency to escape it, to avoid it, ultimate disconnecting from the body and the world around. The invitation is to come back to the Soma (the body), witness the sensations, and develop a sense of safety leading to embodiment.

   2. Making choices

The lack of choice, of control, of the sense of agency is a common denominator among trauma survivors. The invitation is to listen to the body and adjust the practice (choosing the appropriate variation and the depth & duration of a pose) based on felt sensations and emotions. Regaining a sense of agency and a felt sense of control, of being an active participant in one’s own life, help develop a sense of empowerment. In TSY, there is no “shoulds”. Instead, there is freedom of choice, an inner exploration to create a kind gentle, safe and caring experience (all the missing things during trauma)

   3. Taking Effective Actions

The intention is to create opportunities for students to cultivate a sense of self-efficacy and to take active actions to feel better: Rising above helplessness and out of freeze state, by being encouraged to ask for support and help when needed in the practice, to communicate any discomfort and to adjust the environment to create a more pleasant experience (using props, adjusting temperature, asking instructor for more explanation, for a lower voice…)

   4. Creating Rhythms

Dys-synchrony, disconnection, disturbed ability to self-regulate, impaired biorhythms, emotional dysregulation… could lead to isolation. TSY is one way to experience being in sync with other people, through breath, movement and shared experience (interpersonal rhythm), while honouring one’s own rhythm by synchronizing breath & movement (intrapersonal rhythm). The opportunity is to reconnect rhythmically with oneself, others, the world, to find a sense of connection while maintaining a sense of duration and to experience that things end.

These 4 key principles are essential in cultivating Self-Love.
